Course objectives
The course freely follows the course "Czech 19th century fairy tale." The subject of study will be Czech fairy tales of the given period (about 1780 - 1860) in comparison with other national literatures, especially with the Germanic and Slavonic ones, above all in comparison with the fairy tales by Grimm brothers. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to suggest the ways and means of approaching the fairy tales from the interpretative point of view, to introduce different conceptions of their creations in Bohemia and other countries, and ways of integrating the fairy tales into national literatures in the era of classicism and romanticism.

  • 1. Ballad as a genre in the context of Czech literature of National Revival era (F. L. Čelakovský: Toman a lesní panna [Toman and Wood Nymph], K. J. Erben: Kytice [Bouquet] (Svatební košile, Poklad [Wedding Shirts, Treasure]), G. A. Bürger: Lenore (Jungmann s translation into Czech is called Lenka). 2. Fairy tale as a genre in a central European literary context (the impact of brethren Grimms fairy tales on Czech fairy tales of Romantism era) 3. Literature on the subject (A. Grund, V. Jirát, J. Janáčková, H. Šmahelová, G. Langer, V. J. Propp etc.)
