Course objectives
This course will be devoted to journalist works of Karel Čapek that were created between 1917-1938. His journalist works will be presented in the whole context of his career.
Syllabus
  • The course will be divided into several thematic parts. First of all we will focus on Čapeks career in journalism (newspapers and magazines he was working for, his attitude to journalism etc.) Afterwards we will be interested in details in genre, which were the most typical for Čapek (column, sloupek, entrefilet). We will base our study on collections Kalendář, Věci kolem nás, Sloupkový ambit, Zahradníkův rok, Měl jsem psa a kočku, V zajetí slov, Místo pro Jonathana!, Anglické listy, Italské listy, Výlet do Španěl, Cesta na sever and we will classify Čapeks works into a few main thematic cycles political articles, works about nature, literature etc. We will also try to define the place of his journalist works in the whole context of his writing activity and analyse the influence of journalism in his other books.
