Course objectives
On the basis of several works of Czech and world literatures from antiquity to the 20th century, the lectures and discussions will introduce the students to the examination of literary genres, their modifications and combinations, and draw their attention to the difficulty of their classification. The lectures will concentrate on the analysis of the different types and functions of dialogue and monologue, their changeability and ambiguity and their problematic orientation to the aesthetic reception and perception in the context of different kinds of predominantly narrative works. Diverse forms of confession, information, interrogation or exhortation will be interpreted in connection with the historical development of various philosophical tendencies and aesthetic programs. The permanence and variability of many literary conceptions and the convergences or divergences of their application in diverse countries and in diverse period will be demonstrated from a comparative point of view.
By the end of this course of lectures the student will be able to
Apprehend diverse forms of dialogue and monologue and their function in the structure of a literary work, their modifications associated with the development of the philosophical and aesthetic tendencies and with the social situation
Describe from this point of view 1 the works where dialogue and monologue alternate or are accompanied with another type of expression, 2 the position of Czech literature
Understand the ambiguity and changeability of a literary work and its evolution in time
Apply the method of this analysis to other literary works
Syllabus
  • Dialogue in theatrical performances and in other genres; its transitions. The difference between confessions and memoires. Hybridism of the literary expression. Confession or dialogue with God, transition between confession and prayer, between repentance and accusation. Confession as an example of a life – or a warning against its temptations. Dialogue between the author and his hero, or between his conscience and his doubts, transition to the inner monologue. Confessions of „another“ – founded manuscripts, letters of a deceased friend... Monologue of a madman, of a drugged hero, entrance into the world of insanity, fantasy and solitude.

Elaboration of an essay (4-6 pages) - critical interpretation of a literary text - and discussion about the problems evoked in the course.
