Course objectives
The course is constructed as an introduction to the theory and methodology of literary interpretation. It mainly concentrates on critical analysis of elementary concepts in hermeneutics and on the comparison of the individual currents and tendencies in modern theory of interpretation. Primarily the cours deals with the most significant theories in hermeneutics of the 19th century (Schleiermacher, Boeckh, Droysen, Dilthey) and especially of the the 20th century (Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur, Jauss, Derrida, de Man, Hirsch, Eco, Bloom, Rorty). The lectures are structured as historical overviews of the individual currents, their mutual connections and influences. These also provide the students with a wider insight into the development of the individual currents.
