Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the elementary terminology of the theory of fiction based on the notion of possible worlds. Once having become familiar with the terminology the students should be able to use gained notions and strategies to use in an analysis of selected works of Czech modern and postmodern narrative fiction. As much as the theoretical part is presented to the students in a synchronic way when applied it can bring a new view of the history of Czech prose based on the fictional-world view.
Syllabus
  • In the core of the theoretical attention will especially be: the philosophical background of possible-worlds semantics; fictional worlds as possible worlds and their essential properties; narrative modes and fictional existence; natural, supernatural, mythological and hybrid worlds and their metamorphosis; axiological and epistemological quest, fiction with mystery; metafiction; postmodern heterogenic texts and worlds; collage; fiction and history, trans-world identity and counterparts, historic novel and counterfactual historical fiction. All the above mentioned concept will be analysed in connection with the literary works of Czech witers such as Karel Čapek, Franz Kafka, Marie Pujmanová, Václav Řezáč, Egon Hostovský, Jan Čep, Milan Kundera, Miloš (Josef) Urban, Michal Ajvaz, Jáchym Topol, Petr Koťátko, Daniela Hodrová. Assessment methods
In order to obtain the credits the students must attend the seminar, present their seminars topics at the seminar and also submit an essay on a assigned topic at the end of the course. The topics of the final essays will be disscused with the teacher during the course. The only precondition for a successful pass of the course is the students’s knowledge of the Czech version of Heterocosmica: Fiction and Possible Worlds (Karolinum 2003).
