Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand and explain the theory of gender-studies;
- reflect on the history of this approach and its relevance in nowadays;
- enrich the interpretions of the chosen culture phenomenons, especially literary works, with the aspects of gender;
- classify the aspects of gender in the interpretation with the context of other interpretations;
- instigate this approach to other works and cultural phenomenons.
This class is devoted to some of the most known texts of the Czech canon (from Karel Hynek Mácha’s “Máj” to Ota Pavel’s “Zlatí úhoři” and Milan Kundera’s “Falešný autostop”). We will focus on the specific problems of gender and nation in Czech literature in comparison to other Slavonic literatures, and to world literature of that time. We’ll reflect the central thesis of Robert Pynsent and Alfred Thomas, and we’ll see if they are fitting to a proper interpretation of the concrete texts. We’ll ask how the Czech situation will differ from gender positions in East and West.
