Course objectives
Books for teenage girls represent rather a heterogeneous group as far as the quality is concerned. It is traditionally classified into two genre variations of narrative prose from children’s lives, into prose with a girl heroine and a girl novel. The primary aim of the seminar is to make students familiar with basic differences between them. These distinctions will be revealed on the basis of analyses and interpretations of concrete works which have been published since the 19th century. In this way, students will get information about the development of both variants. Greater attention will be paid to literature after 1989 which forms an important part of reading of contemporary young recipients. In lectures students will acquire the knowledge of basic terms connected with the theory of children’s and youth literature (among others: intentional literature for children, narrative prose from children’s lives, reference hero) and with the theory of popular culture (paraliterature, schematism, fabulation models, external and internal features of commercialization etc.) At the end of the course students will be able to:
- use the information about the genre development (of the narrative prose from children’s lives and of prose with a girl heroine) for own interpretation of individual works;
- analyse basic girl novels and prose with a girl heroine;
- define concrete differences between them;
- differentiate between high-quality prose for children and popular paraliterature;
- use relevant secondary literature, including scientific journals.
