Course objectives
An optional seminar designed for those interested in creative translation of different genres and text functions from Czech and into Czech. The main stress will be laid on work with Czech and German texts. The participants will be working mainly with examples of journalistic, literary and commercial texts that will demonstrate the variety of problems and will enable to try different solutions in translating problematic features.
Syllabus
  • The seminar will concentrate on these themes: sociocultural context of ads; terminology and slang in the language of youths; foreign languages in text and words of foreign origin; graphical lookout and illustrations; quotations. Participants to the course will try to master different techniques of creating and optimitzing the text: creating compositions in the target language, brainstorming, brainwriting a clustering in translating; imaginative word-formation; scenic solutions in translation; translating in pairs and in collective.
  • Texts for translation criticism : different poems by Morgenstern; ads; information brochures etc.
  • Texts to translate: Jan Faktor: Körpertexte.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Požadavky k zápočtu: Překladové verze tvoření cílového textu v písemné podobě dle práce v kursu; resp. analýza překladu dle domluvy; aktivní účast v kursu. Termín odevzdání: do konce semestru.
