Course objectives

Lectures are devoted to selected significant issues of Czech literature from the era of fin de siecle to the year of 1945. It is focused on activities of influential literary groups and personalities, such as Czech modern movement, group around the periodical Moderní revue, Catholic modern movement, generation of ravers or pre-war generation, avant-garde groups of poetists and surrealists, Karel Čapek and other representants of pragmatism and relativism and spiritual authors (predominatly catholic). Czech literature is interpreted in the context of literature abroad and of other arts. Regular attention is devoted to recent comments on these issues.
After finishing this course students:
- understand and explain literary development in the broader cultural and social context;
- work with information on literary movements and tendencies, groups and significant personalities that formed this development;
- are familiar with assessment of literature in that time;
- are familiar with later ones and in scholar interpretations.

Syllabus

• Four lecturers lead this course.
• The lectures of Doc. Kudrnáč are devoted to concretization of modernistic tendencies and movements in the generation of 1890s and in generation of ravers to a formation of new modern movement around Almanac for the year 1914 (Almanach na rok 1914). The attention will be paid above all to key authors and groups (new realism, Czech modern group, Modern revue, catholic modern group), i.e. to authors such as J. S. Machar, T. G. Masaryk, H. G. Schauer, A. a V. Mrštíkové, P. Bezruč, F. X. Šalda, O. Březina, A. Sova, J. Karásek ze Lvovic, K. Hlaváček, V. Dyk, F. Šrámek, F. Gellner, K. M. Čapek Chod. Another lectures are devoted to Karel Čapek and other personalities of pragmatic and relativistic orientation such as Josef Čapek, František Langer, Karel Poláček, Ferdinand Peroutka. Following lectures are devoted to spiritual authors such as Jaroslav Durych, Jakub Deml, Jan Zahradníček, Jan Čep.
• The lecture of Dr. Bubeníček is devoted to Czech expresionism.
• The lecture of Dr. Fořt is devoted to Vladislav Vančura.
• The lectures of Dr. Balaštík are focused on avandgarde, mainly poetism and surrealism.

Assessment methods

Assessment: 1) Oral or written examination. 2) Student has to know 1 literary-historical monography or 3 – 5 literary-historical studies on the subject. Student can consult his choice with the teacher.
The examination includes interpretation of those primary sources. Students studying other subjects can specify these conditions with the teachers to get the credits.
