Course objectives
These lectures are devoted to literature of the era of National revival and literature of the second half of the 19th century. It is an elementary course which introduces the first century of modern Czech literature with regards to its position in European (including Czech) history and culture and with regards to its immanent character. Regular attention is devoted to present comments on these issues. Correlation between encyclopedic knowledge and interpretations of literary works is emphasized.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand specific features of the Czech literature of 19th century;
- to use its genre system;
- to compare it with the model of the modern literature.
Syllabus
  • dr. Fránek: This part of the lecture will be devoted to the key discourse formations of Czech literature in the 19th century (Classicism, Romanticism, Realism and Parnassianism) using synoptic-pulsative model of lecture on Czech literary history in the 19th century.
  • dr. Urválková: Lectures by professor Tureček will be completed by this part of lectures using interpretations of selected Czech literary works of the 19th century. We will focus on the specific features of Czech literature of National Revival period on the background European literary development; periodization, its function and its disputability in literary-historical syntheses and syncretism of period movements and tendencies (Baroque, Classicism, Romantism, Biedermeier and Realism). Formation of Revival myths, stereotypes and autostereotypes and their meanings in literary and cultural history of the 19th century will be also taken into account.
