Course objectives
The seminar reacts to dynamic changes in our society accompanied by a bigger number of relationships between people coming from various linguistic backgrounds. The aim of this course is not only to provide the students with information concerning bi- and multilingualism but also to make them aware of how multilingualism can influence different dimensions of everyday life. Special attention will be paid to analysing particular examples of bilingualism and multilingualism in specific language combinations – how languages influence each other (language development) and how they influence the development of a person (psycho-social development). The seminar is aimed at students from various linguistic and pedagogical areas and for foreign students with a very good knowledge of Czech.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be familiar with elementary terminology and theories of bilingualism and multilingualism, he will know how bilingualism emerges and how it cannot be created even if we wanted. He will know how languages can develop and influence each other (with examples of specific language combinations), he will perceive more what difficulties has a person whose mother tongue is not Czech in a foreign language environment, he will be able to adapt his teaching to pupils and students from various linguistic backgrounds and support their linguistic development.
Syllabus
  • Elementary terms and definitions, language acquisition vs. language attrition, bi- and plurilingual families, specific neurological, psychological and sociological aspects of bilingualism – language centers, impact on intelligence, learning other languages, the emergence of neurodegenerative diseases, monolingual society’s approach to bilingual speakers, etc., the influence of more languages from the linguistic and psychosocial aspect in short- as well as long-term perspective – case studies Czech vs. other languages (teachers, students, guests), bilingualism and success at school – the situation in Czech school, recent trends abroad.

Lecture, studying, discussion, students‘ presentations, guests‘ presentations.
Assessment methods
For successful completion of this subject regular attendance, active participation, and task fulfillment, specified at the beginning of the semester, are requested. The subject is completed by written colloquium verifying the orientation in basic linguistic and psychological-pedagogical aspects of bilingualism and multilingualism covered during the seminar.
