Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the problems of the language and communication and to prepare students for the Czech linguistic studies. The lecture will present the basic linguistic terminology, the theories and methods of research and will demonstrate various methodological approaches to the language. There will be a focus on the general linguistic without neglecting the Czech linguistic studies. References to the basic Czech and foreign linguistic works will be also mentioned during the course.
Syllabus
  • 1) Language – linguistics, basic approaches to the language, methods of linguistic research, basic terminology of the field.
  • 2) The origin of the language (phylogenesis and ontogenesis).
  • 3) Differentiation of languages in time, language contacts.
  • 4) Classification of languages according to the genealogical and typological point of view.
  • 5) Parol and nonparol communication, communication model, language functions.
  • 6) Semiotic status of the language.
  • 7) Synchronic (X diachronic) approach to the language, language as a functional system (in the contex of the methodology of Prague Linguistic Circle).
  • 8) Language, standard, codification.
  • 9) Development of scientific concern for the language: a) from ancient era to the beginning of 19th century, b) historical comparative linguistics, c) structuralism, d) pragmatic turns in linguistics.
  • 10) Czech language: basic development profile, territorial and social stratification, current language situation in the Czech Republic.

The course consists of lectures providing students with the opportunity to participate in discussions.
Assessment methods
The exam is written. Exam requirements: be familiar with the basic terminology of the field and problems mentioned during the lectures, the acquaintance of recommended special literature and linguistic magazines.
