Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are:
- the assumption of the history of the Czech countries;
- the delimitation of the main development phases;
- the explication of the cultural development;
- the understanding of the latest Czech history;
- the discernment of the specific characteristics of the Czech contemporary period;
An overview of the Czech history, synopsis of which will be formed by cultural history. Lectures or occasional discussions will try to answer the question in what is the Czech culture, developing during almost a one thousand year period, specific, and in what it shared the destiny with other European states and nations.
Syllabus
  • A concise historically-geographic introduction. Czech land and its position. Bohemia and Moravia at the dawn of history. Traces of pre-historic cultures, Celts and Teutons. Arrival of Slavs. Beginning of Czech civilization. Great Moravia, roman Bohemia. Gothic Bohemia of last Přemyslovci and Luxemburgs. Hussite revolution and its place in Czech history. Renaissance, humanism, Comenius and Czech brothers. Barocco and its legacy. Changes in Czech landscape. National revival and formation of modern Czech culture in the 19th century. Variety of Czech culture in the period of the First republic. February 1948, Stalinism, 1960's, the year 1968, normalization and Czech culture.
