Course objectives
The course focuses on practicing translations from Czech into the student's mother tongue. Creative approaches to translation work will be practiced in short literary, marketing and journalistic texts. The main aims of the course are: - to gain an understanding of the original text and be able to understand it on all levels;
- learn how to formulate skopos target communication and target text;
- define the main translation strategies; learn via creative methods in the translation process;
- to be capable of giving an academic explanation of one's own decisions about how to translate a given text.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- comprehend the source text and analyse it on all levels;
- formulate skopos target communication;
- formulate skopos target text;
- define the main strategies of their translation method;
- apply creative methods in the translation process justify their own decisions on how to translate a given text.

  • Literary and journalistic texts by contemporary Czech authors, for example:
  • Jiří Kratochvil: Má lásko, Postmoderno
  • Egon Bondy: Příšerné příběhy
  • Ivan Wernisch: Doupě latinářů
  • Petr Hruška: Vždycky se ty dveře zavíraly
  • Advertising text Minuta bototerapie
  • Advertising text Marx Halle
Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion, group projects, homeworks.
Assessment methods
Portfolio with student's own translations.

The course is completed with a credit.

Active class attendance in all lessons and a portfolio with prepared text exercises and translated texts are required to receive the credit.

Active attendance means readiness for teaching (completed homework, having study materials, prepared presentation, etc.) and fulfillment of~tasks set by the teacher.
