This course is for upper-intermediate/advanced students. Previous knowledge from secondary school is required, or knowledge based on self-study with an intermediate level coursebook.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to achieve the B2 level (based on the Common European Framework of Reference) of English language competence. Students should understand the main ideas of relatively complex text on both concrete and academic/professional topics, including discussions in their field of specialisation; can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of academic/professional subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

  • Analysis of journalistic texts - abbreviations, acronyms, short forms.
  • Media - print, radio, television, internet - personal pronouns.
  • Job search, the labour market - vocabulary related to movement and body positions; pronoun adverbs.
  • Analysis of journalistic texts - journalistic jargon.
  • Political institutions - past tenses.
  • Environment - sequence of tenses.
  • Immigration policy in France - subjunctive, morphology.
  • Francophone issues - subjunctive, functions.
  • Maghreb nations - prepositions of time.
  • Stylistic language registers - expressing slang and informal language.
  • Analysis of journalistic texts - vocabulary of quantity and measurment units.

Assessment methods
ENTRANCE TEST is written at the start of the semester - 24/09/2009 at 17h in aula of FSS. Seminar form of teaching.
Course completion requirements: written credit test. Active class participation is obligatory.
