Course objectives

Main objectives of the course are:
- interpretation of the selected topics of the Czech literature from a supranational point of view;
- enhancement of the reflection of the older literature in the interdisciplinary context;
- deepening of interpretative skills;
- application of acquired knowledge and skills in the creation of a scientific text and its defense in discussion.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to:
- integrate the knowledge of the older Czech literature in the wider supranational contexts;
- manage and apply methodological procedures of the related disciplines;
- reflect questions of the older Czech literature in the interdisciplinary context;
- use the acquired knowledge and skills in the creation of a scientific text.

Syllabus

• - Development of the Czech medieval literature, genre system, relation of center and periphery;
• - Intertextuality and interdisciplinarity in selected genres (legend, chronicle, drama etc.);
• - Czech medieval prose, especially philosophical, in the process of vernacularization (texts by Stitny, Tkadlecek etc.);
• - Transformations of the genre system, functions and topics in the Czech literature of the Hussite period and with the beginning of early modern period.

The method of the course is based on work with texts – explication, reading, interpretation and discussion.

Assessment methods

Colloquium aimed at testing the student’s insight into the main methodologies of the discipline, and at checking the student’s ability to connect relevant facts into logical relations.
