Course objectives
The Research through Design course will cover various topics, including the concept and significance of Research through Design, perspectives and limitations in information science, and case studies with guest lectures and discussions. The course will also include a session for final essay presentations and collaborative discussions.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: - Understand, explain, and apply the Research through Design approach in the context of information science, - critically evaluate the role of design approaches in information science, - design their own RtD project.

  • What is Research through Design? [CZ]
  • In this section, we will explore the concept of Research through Design and understand its significance in the field of information science.

  • Research through Design in Information Science: Perspectives, Opportunities, and Limitations [CZ]
  • In our second lecture, we will delve into the various perspectives, opportunities, and limitations associated with Research through Design, specifically in the context of information science.

  • Case Study I of Research through Design (Guest Lecture + Discussion) [EN]
  • In this session, we will have a guest lecture and discuss the first case study of Research through Design, exploring real-world examples and their implications.

  • Case Study II of Research through Design (Guest Lecture + Discussion) [EN]
  • Continuing our exploration, we will have a guest lecture and discuss the second case study of Research through Design, examining different approaches and outcomes.

  • Case Study III of Research through Design (Guest Lecture + Discussion) [EN]
  • Moving forward, we will analyze the third case study of Research through Design through a guest lecture and engaging in a discussion, uncovering unique insights and lessons learned.

  • Case Study IV of Research through Design (Guest Lecture + Discussion) [EN]
  • In this session, we will focus on the fourth case study of Research through Design, where a guest lecturer will share their expertise and facilitate a discussion to deepen our understanding.

  • Discussion and Ideas for Final Essay Presentations [CZ + EN]
  • Lastly, we will have an open discussion where we can share and discuss our ideas and preliminary findings for the final essay presentations, allowing for collaboration and feedback from the group.

Teaching methods
Lectures, guest lectures with discussion, theoretical written preparations, final discussion, exam
Assessment methods
To pass the course, you must meet three conditions:

  • be active in class (attendance in 5 out of 7 classes),
  • submit short written preparations for the classes (at least 5 preparations out of 7),
  • submit a final written paper and attend the final exam.

  • The final paper may take the following forms:

  • A research proposal in the field of information science using a Research through Design approach.
  • a systematic review covering the topic of Research through Design (in relationship to a specific discipline, selected problem or using citation analysis)
