Syllabus
  • The »long nineteenth century« has long been marginalized by a form of theatre historiography that focussed on the achievements and innovations of Modernism. In contrast to such an approach, I will suggest a reading of the period that neither follows the master-narrative of the nation state and its homogenous culture, nor will focus on aesthetic processes alone. Instead, I suggest a polyphonic history of the nineteenth century that describes formative processes and political interpretations as the framing conditions of this period.
  • Four lecture will focus on different case studies from history of theatre in 19th century, discussing especially methodological issue. The issues will be presented in series of four lectures:
  • 15th of May (Wednesday) 17.00 - Cartographing the Long Nineteenth Century
  • 16th of May (Thursday) 12.00 - Technology, Commodification, Mediatization, and Metropolitan Culture
  • 17th of May (Friday) - 10.00 Marginalized protagonists and groups in the theatrical landscape of the longe nineteenth century + 14.00 Max Reinhardt: From bourgeois Theatre to Metropolitan Culture.
