Course objectives
The course provides deeper view into 20th century drama, focusing on its experimental forms using language in extreme ways. It also introduces students into necessary and functional theorethical concepts for the field.
Learning outcomes
- students understand transformations of dramatic form in 20th century - students are able to us concepts from analytical philosophy, post-structuralism and performativity in text analysis.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction - general issues, drama, reading.
  • 2. (brief repetition) Structural approach to language: Mukařovský, Veltruský, Procházka, Jakobson.
  • 3. (repetition and aplication) Analysis of Chekhov's Three Sisters in terms of language situations and context building.
  • 4. Language as tool and game – Ludwig Wittegenstein and his Philosophical Inquiries.
  • 5. Language and construction of the world – analytic philosophy of language (R. Rorty aj.)
  • 6. Modernistic experiments with language: Gertruda Stein, James Joyce, experimental plays of Samuel Beckett.
  • 7. Speechplays by Peter Handke (Publikumsbeschimpfung, Kaspar)
  • 8. Ernst Jandl: Auf dem Fremde – who is speaking about who? (+ his experiemental plays).
  • 9. Heiner Müller – whos is this word mud? (Hamlet-Machine, Auftrag, Medea Material).
  • 10. Is stage direction drama? Müller: Bilderbeschriebung, Handke: Die Stunde, da wir nichts voneinander wußten.
  • 11. Martin Crimp: Attempts on her life – who is speaking for whom.
  • 12. Sarah Kane: Crave, Psychosis 4.48 – no comment.
