Course objectives
The course is conceived as an introduction to the theatre and drama of Ireland in the 20th century. Special attention is given to the development of Irish literary theatre, the topics of language, identity, stereotypes, violence and feminism. The authors studied include, among others: W. B. Yeats, Sean O'Casey, Brian Friel, Martin McDonagh
Learning outcomes
Students will learn to critically evaluate dramatic works by the most important Irish playwrights and analyze them in context. We will also watch selected productions/movies/documentaries

  • 1. Introduction to Irish history and culture, connections to English culture 2. Irish theatre up to 20th century. How Irish is Oscar Wilde? 3. George Bernard Shaw – John Bull's Other Island 4. W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory – Irish Literary Revival, Irish mythology and folklore in drama; Kathleen ni Houlihan. 5. J.M. Synge – introducing Aran Islands, language issue; Playboy of the Western World, Riders at the Sea 6. Sean O’Casey; Abbey Theatre 7. Brian Friel, Field Day in Derry and theatre in the Northern Ireland 8. Marina Carr – By the Bog of Cats 9. Martin McDonagh – Lonesome West 10. Enda Walsh 11. Conor McPherson 12. Mark O'Rowe 13. David Ireland

Attendence at classes is compulsory! The maximum number of allowed absences is two (2). Exam method: written test and oral exam.
