Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the fundamental encyclopaedias, scholarly journals and field literature, main editions of the sources for Classical Antiquity, prominent scholars dealing with Ancient History, to teach them the orientation in the maps of the ancient world.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course the students will:
- know the basic encyclopedic manuals and journals of the field, both domestic and foreign, including the electronic resources;
- have the overview of basic trends and features of the development of the whole ancient world, of its geography;
- know the basic editions and their types;
- quote sources and literature correctly;
- know the stages and specifics of the development of the research in the field of Ancient History from Antiquity to the present.
Syllabus
  • 1–4. The importance of the study of Antiquity for the modern society; overview of literature regarding the history of the Near East, ancient Greece and Rome, the main periodicals in our country and in the world, the most important scientific institutions dealing with the history and culture of the Near East, ancient Greece and Rome.
  • 5.–6. Introducing the outlines of the ancient world (the language situation, an overview of economic and political development).
  • 7. Libraries in Brno and its surroundings.
  • 8.–9. Typology and editions of ancient sources.
  • 10. Antiquity on the Internet (Electronic Information Resources, the databases of the Department of Classical Studies).
  • 11. The methods of quoting sources and literature.
  • 12. The history of Ancient History – the Czech lands.
  • 13. The history of Ancient History – the world.
