Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand the political and cultural development in the era of Julio-Claudian dynasty; explain political influence in literary works; interpret the work of Seneca and Petronius.
Syllabus
  • I) Historical events in the era of the Julio-Claudian dynasty 1) The end of the Republic and the creation of the Principate 2) The reign of Claudius 3) The reign of Nero
  • II) Literature as a reflection of political and cultural events 1) The classical period of poetry 2) Spectacularity and theatricality in literary works 3) Rhetorics and its loss of political function
  • III) Satire as the main instrument of Roman criticism 1) Satire as a means of literary criticism of the society 2) Parody and irony 3) Seneca a) His life at the imperial court b) His philosophical works and stoicism c) The Menippean satire Apocolocyntosis 4) Petronius a) Was he the author of Satyricon? b) Satyricon and its structure
