Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be well acquainted with the topography of the Campus Martius in Rome at the beginning of the Principate; they will get a good insight into the Roman imperial propaganda.

  • 1. The Principate of Augustus: Political Regime, Ideology, and Social Realities (includindg an introduction to the period of Civil Wars following the death of Julius Caesar)
  • 2. Augustus and Roman Religion: Octavian’s political mythology, the cult of Apollo and Octavian’s Divine Patrons
  • 3. The Augustan Monuments on the Campus Martius: Mausoleum Augusti, Horologium/Meridianum Solarium Augusti, Ustrinum Augusti, Ara Pacis Augustae, and the Pantheon of Marcus Agrippa
  • 4. Elements of Augustan Art: a Case Study, the Ara Pacis Augustae. Conclusions
