Prerequisites
The course Source Language - Commented Translation is intended for those students, who have completed no less than four semesters of at least one source language at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk Unviersity, before the start of their Ph.D. studies in Ancient History.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to verify that the Ph.D. candidate possesses sufficient competencies for an independent work with primary sources in the original.
Learning outcomes
The Ph.D. candidate will be able to translate, interpret and comment on ancient sources in a language according to his/her specialization independently and on a scholarly level.
Syllabus
  • The Ph.D. candidate hands in a commented translation of a text selected from an ancient source/ancient sources according to his/her specialization (the selection must be approved by the supervisor). The required length of the commented translation is 8 standard pages. The doctoral student can be asked by the supervisor to present his/her translation e.g. at a doctoral students' meeting.

  • Literatura je předepsána individuálně podle zvolených pramenů.
  • Literature is assigned on an individual basis based on the selected primary sources.
Teaching methods
Producing an independent commented translation, presentation of the text.
Assessment methods
Evaluation of the translation's linguistic accuracy and the commentary's professional quality.
