Course objectives
A series of lectures concentrates on the development of military and conflicts since the founding of Rome to the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Gravity of interpretation is mainly focused on specific military campaigns, battles, and a description of historical military tactics and strategy. Students should get an overview of the most important battles and military clashes of ancient Rome in the reporting period of history, including the understanding of fundamental political and social contexts that directly related to the other studied wars.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, the beginning of military history of Rome 2. Rome conquered the Apennine Peninsula (Samnites, Brennus, Pyrrhus etc.). 3. The beginnings of wars with Carthaginians (first Punic War, preparation of Hannibal's campaign) 4. The end of Carthage (2nd and 3rd Punic War Punic War) 5. Territorial expansion (War with Kimbra, raids on the Balkans) 6. The first crisis of the Republic (Marius, Sulla, Spartacus etc.) 7. 1st triumvirate an Caesar (Caesar's campaign, The decline of the Republic) 8. 2. triumvirate and termination of the Republic 9. Raids of Emperors (Augustus, Claudius, Nero) 10. Flavian dynasty (Year of four emperors, The rebellion in Judea) 11. Trajan (Trajan and Hadrian government) 12. Development of combat formations and strategies of the Roman army 13. Major battlefield and the battle from the perspective of sources
