Course objectives
The student will gain a complex overview of the complicated developments in the Western Europe in the transition period between Antiquity and Medieval times. He will acquire competences to use metodological procedures in order to independently analyze the development in the early medieval states. The student will also gain knowledge of certain characteristic features of the transition periods in the human history.
Syllabus
  • 1) basic definition of the barbarian states, the general features
  • 2) Visigoths - the origins of the romanisation, tribal organisation; The kingdom of Toulouse; The kingdom of Toledo in the 6th century; The kingdom of Toledo in the 7th century
  • 3) Ostrogoths
  • 4) Burgundians
  • 5) Vandals
  • Seminar: Reading of literary sources for the history of the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Burgundians and the Vandals.
