Course objectives
The course in its first part seeks to acquaint the art history student with the basic styles and architects, working in the 17th century in Italy and France. In this epoch there are created the classical systems of the baroque architecture
Syllabus
  • 1. What is the baroque in the architecture?: definition and historiography of the baroque. & 2. The sources of the baroque architecture in Rome: a) Michelangelos pupils and followers; b) From Vignola to early baroque. & 3. Carlo Maderno (1556-1629): the creator of the baroque architecture. & 4. Pietro Berrettini da Cortona (1596-1669): "classic" of the baroque architecture. & 5. Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680): "bel composto" in the architecture. & 6. Francesco Borromini (Castelli, 1599-1667): the "radical" baroque architecture. & 7. Guarino Guarini (1624-1683): the geometry of the elements of space. & 8. The architecture in Rome and in North Italy in the 2nd half of the 17th century. & 9. The definition and history of the french classic architecture in the 17th century. & 10. The builders of cardinals: Jacques Lemercier and Louis Le Vau. & 11. François Mansart 1598-1666: the ideal of french classic? & 12. Louis XIV., Louvre and Versailles. & 13. Jules Hardouin – Mansart 1646-1708: or synthesis of french architecture of the 17th century. &
