Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is an overview of the history of late romanesque and early gothic architecture in Bohemia and Moravia, namely in the broader kontext of Central Europe. At the end of the course students should have basic knowledge of fundamental literature, should be aware of the historical kontext and they should also be able to understand and explain regional and general phenomenon of architecture and its decoration. They should be able to recognize different methodological approaches to research in this area not only history of art, but also history, archeology and monument care.

  • 1. Introduction into architecture of the 13th century – literature, historiography and methodology 2. Late romanesque Czech lands under Přemysl Otakar I. 3. Late romanesque Moravia under margrave Vladislav Jindřich 4. Beginning of Gothic style in Moravia under margrave Přemysl 5. Beginning of Gothic style in Czech under Václav I. 6. Construction activities in the time of Přemysl Otakar I. 7. Construction activities in the time of Václav II. and III.

Teaching methods
The course is taught in the form of lectures, special scholarly excursion will allow practical view on current state of the late romanesque and early gothic architecture in Moravia.
