The course is intended for students of art history, especially (but not only) in M.A. degree. A certain level of knowledge in the field is therefore assumed. Since the output will be a written text, the ability to produce a short professional text is a prerequisite.

Course objectives
The aim of this seminar is an art historical research, analysis and evaluation of two specific objects of Brno architecture. Specifically, the premises of the Czech Girls' Boarding House and the Vesna School between Údolní and Jaselská Street in Brno. Our main interest will be two buildings on Jaselská Street, both from the same period (1897 and 1899), one Neo-Renaissance, the other Art Nouveau, one by the Brno builder Tebich, the other by the Prague architect Antonín Pfeiffer, one decorated with paintings by Joža Úprka, the other by Jano Köhler and with a sculpture by Josef Pekárek. The furniture was supplied by Dušan S. Jurkovič. The seminar will focus on a) the history, status and function of Vesna b) the urban context c) the personalities of the artists concerned d) the exteriors of both buildings and their artistic decoration e) the interiors of the two buildings, their artistic decoration and their plan layout During the semester, emphasis will be placed on team and individual art history work. At the end of the semester, the output will be student texts that will be prepared for official publication as a brochure for those interested in Brno architecture.
Learning outcomes
During the course students will develop their skills as art historians on a specific assignment, specifically in terms of working with literature, contemporary sources, archival sources and art historical material itself. Under the guidance of the tutors, they will improve their writing of specialist texts, and will also try out editing and editorial work on the text.
