Prerequisites
The course is intended for students of master degree studies. Basic knowledge on history of European baroque painting in 17th and 18th century is presupposed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course is focused on the specifics of the art at the court of the Spanish King Phillip IV, the patronage of art works in Spain and Italy and contemporary works of Spanish painters, especially of Diego Velázquez. Current interpretations of his most important paintings "Las Meninas" and "Las Hilanderas" will be introduced.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
- characterise the Spanish painting in the Baroque and its place in context of the baroque painting in other European countries;
- explain the way of ordering of art works also a social status of artists in Spain and Italy;
- identify the typical stylistic feature of the Velázquez´s work and interpret the most important pictures of Velázquez "Las Meninas" and "Las Hilanderas".

  • Velázquez as the painter at the court of Phillip IV.
  • Art decoration of the Kings summer residences: Rubens and Torre de la Parada, Lorrain and Buen Retiro.
  • Velázquez´s journeys in Italy.
  • Velázquez´s allegoric compositions "Las Meninas" and "Las Hilanderas".
