Course objectives
The Brno gallery scene is an introduction to the public, private and artist run gallery spaces. Students will also receive a brief overview of the history and processes in the art scene. We will visit established institutions (Brno House of Arts, The Moravian Gallery...) as well as commercial and off-spaces, focusing on their message and vision for the future. The lectures will be held mostly in situ (if the situation permits) in order to have opportunities to discuss the current exhibitions and meet with professionals in the field.
Learning outcomes
Deepening of knowledge and skills in the field of Brno gallery scene. Orientation in exhibition practice and in different types of gallery spaces (state, municipal, commercial and independent galleries). The competencies that learners will acquire and demonstrate on graduation are the ability to distinguish and name different types of exhibition spaces and to critically evaluate a selected exhibition.
Syllabus
  • 1.-3. Visit the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the second largest museum in the Czech Republic. It comprises 5 buildings, of which we will focus mainly on the three that function as exhibition galleries. It takes a very comprehensive approach to art and manages practically all artistic media, from classical paintings, drawings and sculptures to new media such as audiovisual presentations or various sculptures. It does not leave out architecture either, as it also manages and operates 2 important buildings, one of which is the Jurkovič Villa. 4. A visit to the House of Art , which operates with exhibitions of a shorter duration, focusing on 20th century art and the contemporary art scene of the domestic and European environment. It does not own its own collections. It also houses the Vasulka Kitchen, named after Woody and Stein Vasulka - makers of structural and documentary video films, and among the first artists to experiment with video technology. The space is now the Center for New Media Arts, and consists of the Vasulka's studio archive, an exhibition of selected works, and a study room that are open to the public. The 5th Gallery of the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) shelters three separate exhibition spaces of different ages, each of which selects its artists according to different requirements. The Young Gallery, in operation since 1967, presents mainly young and female artists. Approximately 8 exhibitions are held in this section per year, for which there is always an accompanying programme, such as various events, lectures, guided tours, discussions, etc. The Gallery at the Good Shepherd was founded in 1992 and exhibits already well-known artists. The main idea of this section is to provide space for artists who, although already established in the field, are not yet sufficiently "proven" for the big exhibition houses. The last and youngest section is the Context Gallery, responding mainly to art of the last decade, for example, the theme for 2021 is "app-art". 6. Visit a commercial gallery with a quality art program - Fait gallery is a private gallery institution instigated and patronized by the Brno entrepreneur Igor Fait. Its headquarters are located in the immediate vicinity of the Vaňkovka shopping centre. Before 2016, there was also a private gallery institution here, which was called Adam Gallery. The entire gallery is divided into 3 exhibition spaces: the first and main space is used for larger solo exhibitions. In the second part, called FG PREVIEW, you can encounter mainly personalities of the youngest generation of the art scene, thus dealing with distinctive contemporary work, often mainly of a foreign context. And the last part is FG MEM, focusing on the young and middle generation, usually guest artists. 7. Industra Gallery in the space of the former Zbrojovka factory. Also a commercial gallery that supports art school students, graduates or already established artists, from the Czech Republic and abroad. It is also worth mentioning the accompanying Industra Art Class programme, which is an educational programme about art for all ages. It consists of various workshops, lectures and other activities to connect the professional and lay public, and to create a space for meeting and discussion. 8. A visit to Off Format, an independent gallery that focuses on presenting young, mainly Czech artists and is open to artistic expression in a variety of content and media. The aim of the gallery is to initiate new encounters and to promote innovative perspectives in the field of visual culture, inviting all current and future people interested in quality art from the professional and general public. Presentation and education Šimon Kříž. 9. A visit to the FaVU Geleria, whose programme is a continuation of the activities of the Aula Gallery, the operation of which was interrupted in 2016 due to the relocation of the faculty. The gallery has returned to its original name, thus more clearly declaring its mission and at the same time raising the profile of the institution of which it is an integral part. Presentation by Tomáš Plachký. 10. Post Post Gallery, an independent gallery and space for the presentation of contemporary art of a predominantly younger generation in the showcase of a city underpass. Presentation by Viktória Pardovičová. Visit to the Pitevna Gallery, the gallery of the Faculty of Education, MU. 11. Visit to studios on Kraví hora within Open studios, Open studios incubator. Lecture by resident Polina Davydenko and open studios organizer Václav Kočí. 12. Visit to the studio of visual artist Jiří Dolinský, discussion with the artist, insight into the work of the painter - explanation of painting techniques and exhibition history.
