Prerequisites
The course assumes basic knowledge of Latin morphology (in particular: 1/ nouns and adjectives of the 1st-3rd declensions 2/ present, imperfect and perfect tenses of verbs of the 1st - 4th conjugations 3/ cardinal and ordinal numbers 4/ prepositions).
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
While working with selected examples of Latin texts from different historical periods of the development of the Latin language, students will acquire the basic skills needed to understand Latin sources of various types. The reading of the particular examples will be supplemented by the interpretation of selected grammatical phenomena and practical examples of the use of various manuals, tools end encyclopedias.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: -translate a short Latin text into Czech (or his/hers first language) -understand the meaning of a longer Latin text and select important facts from it -transcribe the Latin text - prepare a simple edition of the Latin text -use basic tools (dictionaries, encyclopedias, editions of sources)
Syllabus
  • The historical classification, provenance, content and grammatical difficulty of the Latin texts that will be read at the seminar will be adapted to the individual interest and needs of the students. Their own texts will be welcome.

Class discussion
Assessment methods
-active participation in class discussion (homework is being worked on) -independent processing of a real Latin text (at the end of the semester, the student submits a seminar paper in which he/she processes a selected example of his/hers or an assigned Latin text)
