Course objectives
Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin Jun.(1654-1728) is one of the notable figures of Baroque architecture in Europe. During his study visits, he met with both the French and especially the academic Roman architecture. At the royal court in Stockholm Tessin has gained a prominent position as a courtier, politician and lawyer. His most famous building is a project of the Royal Castle in Stockholm. Tessin Jun. left a large number of notes, drawings and projects and all of his work can be interpreted not only from the classical concepts of the history of architecture, but also in terms of the history of taste and history of visual culture. His work can be well compared with other architects, who came from the Roman academic milieu or were trained in Rome. At the conclusion of this lecture, Tessins architectural work can be compared with similar culture in Central Europe, and specifically in the Czech lands also.
