Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the topics in history of the Interim theatre in Prague. At the end of the course student will be able to define the specifics of the Interim theatre; appraise the differences between romantic theatre programs of J. K. Tyl and J. J. Kolár; explain the differences between the two romantic theatre programs; describe political influences on the history of the Czech theatre from 1862 to 1883; compare specifics of the Czech romantic theatre with European romantic theatre.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the course. The Czech theatre 1848-1851. 2. Evolution of the Czech theatre in the 50s of the 19. century. 3. Opening of the Interim theatre in 1862. 4. Concept and systematization crisis. 5. The Interim theatre in the 60s. 6. The Interim theatre in the 70s. 7. Theatre authors in the Czech lands. 8. Stage design in the interim theatre. 9. Opera in the interim theatre. 10. Estival theatres in Prague.

Theoretical preparation – lecture (2 hours per week), discussion. Individual preparation – reading of texts. Individual consultation – when necessary.
