Course objectives
Course description: During the course, the students will learn about Charles Sanders Peirce (from the field of American semiotics) and Ferdinand de Saussure (from European semiotics) who are considered to be the founders of modern semiotics. We will define the starting points and concepts of the theories of these two important contributors to semiotics. We will compare the theories and show them in a wider context, capturing their transformations and developments. We will map out a very important period in American semiotics - the activities of the European immigrants to the USA (R. Jakobson, P.Lévi-Strauss) - as an important intellectual stream in American theory. In conclusion we will become acquainted with Charles Morris' work, a milestone in the history of semiotics. Morris connects American and European predecessors in semiotics and establishes a clear scientific and theoretical position that has determined the scientific status of semiotics to date. Moreover, Morris was the first to include Peirce's work in semiotics.
