Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: explain the development of fundamental basic theoretical directions of ethnology; interpret the results of the history of ethnology research in social and cultural connections; combine the methodological steps in ethnology and cultural anthropology; evaluate the development of ethnology in comparison with other disciplines.
Syllabus
  • Inntroduction to the history of ethnology.
  • Beginning of interest in the “strange” and “different” in antiquity.
  • Islam and Europe, conflicts of various cultures.
  • Discovery of America and “end of certainty” in Europe.
  • Consequences of modern explorations (new knowledge as well as different views on own culture).
  • The Enlightenment, pre-Romantism in Europe.
  • Romantism as the background for defining “Folk” and its culture
  • Evolutionist theory in anthropology and ethnology.
  • Diffusionism.
  • Psychological and sociological schools.
  • Functionalism.
  • Structuralism.
