Course objectives
The course informs the students about ethnographic museology as one of significant tools used in the cultural heritage preservation. The subject´s goal is to explain the historical context in the development of ethnographic museology, the museum legislation and the principles of museum work.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the first series of the lecture cycle focused on the preservation of cultural heritage in museum institutions, the students will have command of museum legislation and principles of museum work, especially evidence, treatment, care and assessment of collections; making them accessible through exhibitions (libretto and script of an exhibition, museography), publishing (expert texts, catalogue, bibliography) and lectures. They will be able to discuss about the ethic of museum staff and their work.

  • 1. Terminology.
  • 2. Taxonomy.
  • 3. Legislation.
  • 4. Collecting.
  • 5. Origin and description of individual museum collections in the Czech lands, their importance for the region from the broader research point of view, focus of collections.
  • 6. Principles of museum work, namely registration, processing, care and evaluation of the collection stock – its presentation by way of exhibitions (exhibition libretto and scenario, museography), publishing (specialised texts, catalogues, bibliography) and lectures.
  • 7. Ethics of a museum worker.
