Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with traditional forms of transport of people and material with a focus on Central European region. In the introductory lectures the course participants will get to know a cross-section of the history of ethnological research of traditional transport, but also the methodology, possibilities and perspectives of research on this topic. The terminology of selected concepts (transport x doprava, traditional x modern) will also be elucidated and the students will be acquainted with the typology, production and use of individual traditional means of transport. This may help future museum staff in better orientation in collection items from the economy and transport sectors. The course will also cover professional groups (woodworkers, carriers, swimmers, formants) using their means of transport. Concluding lessons will focus on the current usage of traditional forms of transport. It will also focus on modern modes of transport and related professional groups such as bus and tram drivers and other groups. The course will provide students not only with practical facts from the field of traditional and partly contemporary transport, but will also acquaint them with the possibilities of ethnological and anthropological research of this topic in the present.
