Course objectives
The course aims to introduce students to selected characteristics and principles of theatre and to try to look at theatrical expressions as a possible subject of ethnological research. The course also introduces students to the general development of theatre culture in the Czech lands concerning contemporary society. The course will offer students a view of theatrical expressions from a cultural perspective.
Learning outcomes
Based on the completion of the course, the student should understand the basic principles of theatre and the role of theatre culture in the overall development of culture in Europe, especially in the Czech Republic. The student will also understand how the specific field of folk theatre developed in space and time. The student will be able to analyse theatrical expressions and place them in a broader cultural context.

Teaching methods
Teaching will take the form of lectures and group discussions. Students will also be assigned reading material or videos to view. Students will also be encouraged to reflect on their experiences in theatre and bring their critical perspectives to the discussion.
Assessment methods
The course will end with a discussion over a seminar paper on a pre-arranged topic. In the seminar paper, the students will evaluate their own theatrical experience or analyze a text related to the position of theatre in society.
