Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to describe the process of ethnogenesis of the Slovak nation, the basic facts of Slovak folk culture, and the development of Slovak ethnology.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to describe the ethnogenesis of the Slovak nation, define the basic realities and elements of traditional folk culture.
Syllabus
  • Ethnogenesis of the Slovaks and their transformation into a modern nation. Slovaks abroad. Ethnic composition of present-day Slovakia and its problems. Historiography of Slovak ethnography (Enlightenment, national revival). Development of Slovak ethnology as a scientific discipline (20th century). Contemporary Slovak ethnology and anthropology.
