Course objectives
The cours presents history and culture of Slovaks. This ethnic is very near to the development of the Czech space – there are connects in ethnogenesis, culture, social development and therefore political development leading to establish the common state Czechs and Slovaks.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to describe the process of ethnogenesis of the Slovak nation, the basic facts of Slovak folk culture, and the development of Slovak ethnology.

  • Ethnogenesis of the Slovaks and their transformation into a modern nation.
  • Slovaks abroad.
  • Ethnic composition of present-day Slovakia and its problems.
  • Historiography of Slovak ethnography (Enlightenment, national revival).
  • Development of Slovak ethnology as a scientific discipline (20th century).
  • Contemporary Slovak ethnology and anthropology.
