Course objectives
The students will become aware of the importance of the Balkan complex family as a European phenomenon, and will become acquainted with it in wider European and Mediterranean historical context. They will master the current theoretical and factual knowledge regarding the study of the European and Balkan historical family, and basic ethnological terminology. They will understand the principles of patriarchal, patrilineal, and patrilocal tradition and its synchronic and diachronic dimensions. They will become aware of the similarities and differences based on ethnicity and religion, and the width of the relationships between the family and customary law, economy, and residence in the rural and urban environment of the Balkans.

  • Traditional family in European research. The study of the historical family in the Balkans. Individual and complex traditional family: geographical distribution, quantitative aspect, cyclical character, regional differentiation, zadruga in rural and urban environment Domestic servants. Zadruga in the Balkans: definition, transitional forms, functionality and viability. Names, size, types. Social statuses. Structure. Collectivism. Forms of residence. Division. Kinship unrelated zadruga. Family: marriage, virginity, marriage age, snohačestvo, regulation of birth rate, children, domazet, divorce Muslim family
