Course objectives
This course provides an overview of the chronological development of videogames from the first console games to contemporary PC interactive creations. The main objective is not a list of inaccessible game titles. We will focus on the development of the most important aspects of gameplaying, such as violence (Doom), gender play (Lara Croft), simulations of virtual spaces (The Sims), internet gaming (Ultima Online), players subcultures (Quake), MODs (Half-Life), hacker art (Machinima) and videogame market, emphasizing its situation in the Czech republic. We will dwell upon the texts on gender play and fan culture by Henry Jenkins (the MIT) . This course is a follow-up to the earlier course Culture of games (FAVBKt001).
