Course objectives
The lecture will guide the students through the documentary landscape of the post-WW2 period. The twelve ninety-minute-long blocks are composed according to stylistic and authorial approaches in the world documentary film. Lectures with screenings should explore the borders of documentary film, its hybrid forms and show different ways of its approach to reality. Doubts about the truthfulness of cinéma vérité, found footage film, amateur film as the footage, private diary, film poem, science and film visuality, politically engaged film, directed reality – these are some of the topics and genres that will be introduced. The course is aimed not only at the students of Film Studies, but also at those with interest in audiovisual culture and different kinds of creative film. The course will present tendencies and personalities of documentary cinema but also stylistic questions such as the role of commentary, titles, work with music, possibilities of camera and editing.
Main objectives: basic orientation in the history of world documentary cinema after 1945; the student should be able to formulate his/her own definition of documentary film.
