Course objectives
The course „Chapters From the History of the Slovak Cinema“ deals with its subject from two aspects. On one hand it pursues political, ideological and historical connectivities that have influenced narrative structure models of the Slovak films. Conncurrently, it also analyzes the reflection of the film creation (both critical and theoretical) and its impact. On the other hand it pursues stylistics techniques and writing styles of the respective authors and their approach to the reality whereas the reality is not understood as things-in-itself but in conjunction with the meanings and sense we add into them. Students will familiarize themselves with „civilism“ (Bielik, Solan, Hollý, Hanák...), „stylization“ (Plicka, Uher, Havetta, Jakubisko...) and with the work of the youngest generation of the Slovak document oriented film makers (Kerekes, Škop, Lehotský, Vojtek, Rusnoková...) as well. Course graduates will benefit from substantial survey of the Slovak cinematography contexts.
The course will include dvd screenings and / or selected Slovak film extracts on dvd´s provided by the lecturer.
