Course objectives
The course will focus on some aspects of history and development of West German cinema from the sixties to the eighties. Lectures will concentrate on the phenomenon of Young German Cinema and mainly on the phenomenon of New German Cinema. In detail we will focus on the role of international reflection in the process of forming of New German Cinema and on the trend of auteur directors as international stars (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, Margarethe von Trotta, Alexander Kluge, Wim Wenders or Werner Herzog). Besides that we will concentrate for example on the strategies of production, distribution and exhibition of new german cinema films or on thematic, genre and stylistic characteristics of the films (political and socially-critical films, woman and feminist films or camp and kitsch). The lecture will be supported by a set of screenings.
