- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the life and work of Zdeněk Liška (1922–1983), a key figure of the Czechoslovak film music and a composer who, from the late 1940s to the early 1980s, concentrated exclusively on composing film music.
- Syllabus
- (1) Historical, theoretical and aesthetic-analytical approaches to the research on film music. (2) Transformations of Czech film music from the 1940s to the 1980s. (3) Background of Liška's style and poetics: the Prague Conservatoire (Rudolf Karel); modernism [moderna] vs. interwar avant-gardes; popular music; the impact of Janáček and Martinů. (4) Zlín period: the music for nonfiction films. (5) The 1950s and a genesis of Liška's poetics. (6) Collaboration between František Vláčil and Zdeněk Liška: tandem poetics? (7) Liška's music in the 1960s. (8) Liška's music in the period of "normalization". (9) Liška and serial, electroacoustic/concrete, aleatoric and timbre music. (10) Liška's exploitations of popular/functional/banal music. (11) Liška's film music and the representations of history. (12) The possibilities of the research on Liška's work; filmography; bibliography; reception.
