Course objectives
The lecture focuses on national cinemas of Romania, Bulgaria and the countries of the former Yugoslavia from the beginnings to present days.
The main aims of the course are:
to get acquainted with the history of cinemas of Romania, Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia
to study not only their pieces of art but genre production and other elements of popular culture as well
to discuss historical and political conditions of these national cinemas, including questions of propaganda and banned films.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to
be acquainted with typical genres of Romanian and Yugoslavian cinema
understand, how film art reflect history of the region
interpret hidden and subversive meanings in watched films
recognize their aesthetic value
know local stars, actresses and actors
understand relationships between politics and film industry in the region
decode elements of nationalism and propaganda
be acquainted with contemporary production of Romanian, Bulgarian and post-Yugoslavian cinemas
understand the importance of the Romanian New Wave in world cinema
