Course objectives
Vojtěch Jasný was one of the major filmmakers of Czech cinema after World War II, known for the lyrical imagination of his Moravian trilogy Touha (Desire), Až přijde kocour (The Cassandra Cat) and Všichni dobří rodáci (All My Good Countrymen). He left Czechoslovakia after the Soviet invasion of 1968. Until 1983 he worked in West Europe (especially Germany and Austria); then he moved to New York. Jasny's exile work includes more than thirty films: features and TV features (e.g. Ansichten eines Clownes, Fluchtversuch, Ruckkehr, The Great Land of Small), documentaries (e.g. Ernst Fuchs - Rätsel der Sphinx, Why Havel?), and independent experiments (e.g. Bäume, Vögel und Menschen, Gladys). This lecture course also includes videoscreenings of Jasny's films. Literature: JASNÝ, Vojtěch (1999): Život a film. Praha: Národní filmový archiv.
