Course objectives
Ivan Passer (b. 1933) is one of the major filmmakers of the Czech new wave. He cooperated on Miloš Forman's films and his first feature, Intimní osvětlení (Intimate Lighting, 1965), was a bitter comedy that became a classic picture shot in cinéma-vérité style. After the Soviet invasion of 1968 he left Czechoslovakia for the U.S.A., where he made independent films: e.g. Born to Win (1971), a black comedy about a New York junkie, and a famous neo-noir film about an ex-Vietnam veteran, Cutter's Way (1981). Later he also made TV-films (e.g. Stalin, 1992; Picnic, 2000). This lecture course will also include videoscreenings of Passer's films.
